More Attention You Garner, Always The Better In Marketing!
Ambush marketing is a
marketing strategy where a company literally ambushes its competitor’s
marketing gimmicks to steal the spotlight by gaining a strong upper hand in
terms of the exposure. Though it has many methods, it all comes with one common
feature: It aligns a brand with an event or property without having paid for
the right to be a sponsor.
Gone are the days of 4Ps
of marketing, companies and corporate all around the world are now using smart
and cheeky ambush marketing tactics to get noticed. Here are two of the famous
examples of Ambush Marketing:
Samsung vs. Apple
In October of 2011, Apple
was all set to launch its latest iteration of its flagship mobile device, the
iPhone 4S. Launch of the phone was projected to be one of the most anticipated
events of the year. Samsung then decided to crash Apple’s big party by having a
pop-up store just few feet away from Apple’s storefront in Sydney, Australia.
While eager Apple fans
waited patiently to get their hands on the new iPhone, Samsung proceeded to
sell its Galaxy SII device for a tempting offer - just $2 AUS compared to
Apple’s $850 iPhone.
Though plenty of people
managed to resist Samsung’s tempting offer, but still many chose to Samsun over
iPhone 4S.
BMW vs Audi
In 2009, World’s largest
Car manufacturers BMW and Audi were at war on bill boards. It began soon after
BMW hosted a rally in Wisconsin, an event that was publicized through a
campaign - “A BMW rally with two nearby service centers. What’s next,
paramedics at a chess tournament?”
Audi soon saw an
opportunity to capitalize upon BMW’s campaign. In response to BMW’s ads, Audi
purchased a billboard in Santa Monica advertising its new A4 sedan and mocking
BMW’s slogan with impressions: ‘Chess? No thanks, I’d rather be driving’!
Audi then doubled it with
one more billboard going with the same chess theme that stated: ‘Your move,
BMW’.
BMW didn’t take this
attack lying down. Finally, they responded back setting up another enormous
billboard close to that of Audi with a picture of its M3 model with the words
“Checkmate”.
